Invitation and Call for Applications
Introduction:
Multi-market partial equilibrium models can provide important insights for food policy in the context of shocks to production, household incomes and international prices. Combining estimates of current levels of supply and demand by various household groups in for different products and/or geographical markets, along with key model parameters describing the responsiveness of supply and demand in each market to changes in prices and incomes, these models help to quantify effects of economic shocks, as well as alternative policy options.
Workshop structure and objectives:
This hands-on workshop will include a presentation of the structure, equations and parameters of a multi-market partial equilibrium model for Sudan, and “hands-on” exercises using a simple multi-market model in Microsoft Excel.
This workshop will be followed by a research capacity strengthening program implemented from May to September 2023. Groups of course participants will have the opportunity to submit a research proposal to analyze the potential effects of an agricultural or food policy in Sudan (e.g. the impact of a large scale fertilizer subsidy on sectoral output and household incomes), using versions of the analytical research tools described in the three-days training. These proposals will be reviewed by a panel of senior researchers. The research teams authoring selected proposals will be invited to write papers to be presented at the Annual Conference of IFPRI-Sudan by the end of 2023.
This workshop falls within one of the overall objectives of IFPRI-Sudan capacity strengthening agenda of building modeling community of practice. Specific objectives of this workshop are to develop the analytical research capacities of participants in areas of multi-market modeling, as well as to enhance quantitative assessment capacities of participants to engage in shaping the policy debate on the reform alternatives.
Workshop prerequisites and target audience:
The workshop requires a solid background in intermediate microeconomics, macroeconomics and international trade. Interested participants with economics, agricultural economics, development economics, or related backgrounds are welcome to apply.
