In response to the 2023 conflict in Sudan and its extensive socio-economic repercussions, a study by Khalid Siddig, James Thurlow, Mosab Ahmed, Josée Randriamamonjy, and Mariam Raouf investigates the resultant economic, poverty, and undernourishment impacts using the RIAPA economywide model for in-depth analysis at national and household levels.
Presented by Khalid Siddig at the EcoMod 2024 conference on July 3, 2024, the study highlights significant economic contractions, with GDP reductions of up to 18% and increases in poverty rates by 8 to 11.6 percentage points, affecting an additional 2.7 to 3.9 million people. Undernourishment rates are projected to rise by 3.9 to 6.0 percentage points, adding approximately 1.3 to 2.0 million people to those already affected.
The research proposes recovery strategies focusing on agricultural productivity, infrastructure investment, and social protection measures. Enhanced agricultural productivity scenarios suggest poverty reductions by as much as 1.9 million people by 2028. The study emphasizes the urgency of coordinated policy efforts and international support for sustainable development and stability in Sudan.
